Anatomy of an Exhibition - Art Nouveau, 1890-1914
Take a look behind the scenes as the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., plans, designs, and constructs an ambitious,
large-scale exhibit titled Art Nouveau, 1890-1914. Images, interviews, and flawlessly executed page design detail both concept and contents of the show. The site is a brilliant primer for an exuberant and influential period in modern art, and a stylish example of how to teach art history online. Don't miss the Time Lapse Movie of the three-month construction of the Paris Room, a curvilinear homage to Art Nouveau in the City of Light.

Art Trails Through Victoria's Regional Galleries
Australian Museums Online presents this tour of regional art galleries in the province of Victoria. Coast along the Port Phillip Bay to view contemporary art and view one of Australia's most significant collections of works on paper at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery. The gold rush of the mid-1800s brought both people and European-style art to the area west of Melbourne. One such town, Castlemaine, houses works from the "Golden Era" of Australian landscape painting. The Midlands region was home to one of Australia's most notorious bushrangers, Ned Kelly, and the area's Shepparton Art Gallery features works from early convict potters as well as contemporary art. All of these trails lead to some of Australia's great regional art and history.
Art of World War I
The major museums of Europe launch a moving art exhibit commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Armistice of 1918. The "Great War" lasted for five years and caused the deaths of over eight million people. It saw the collapse of three empires--Germany, Austro-Hungary and Russia. Featured painters include Pablo Picasso, Marc Chagall, and Egon Schiele.
Artnoir Showcase
Bosch Universe
The fascinating life and works of Jheronimus Bosch are revealed through this dynamic web site, an interactive experience that
marries innovative site navigation with appealing subject matter. Split into three chapters, the site presents a comprehensive look
at the 15th-century artist. Study Bosch's paintings, drawings, and triptychs in detail; learn all there is to know about the mysterious
Dutch painter's life; and explore the influence Bosch had on his contemporaries, as well as on the artists of today. As one visitor
suggests, this site gives us "the chance to take a glimpse right into the soul of the 15th century."
Collage
London's Guildhall Library and Guildhall Art Gallery present their collection of prints, drawings, and maps that focus on London topography and six centuries of civic life on the river Thames.
Early American Paintings
The Worcester Museum of Art in Massachusetts presents this sleek collection of landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. The paintings date from the late 17th century until around 1830 (when the U.S. population was 12.9 million), and the interface is as engaging as the art -- scroll horizontally through the timeline for historical context, or click on a painting to view a close-up, artist biography, and related works.
George Ortiz Collection
This elegant image catalog documents the extraordinary treasures of George Ortiz, a passionate connoisseur and collector of art from ancient Greece, Mesopotamia, Egypt, and neighboring civilizations, as well as sculpture from Africa, Pre-Columbian America, and the Pacific. You'll need the Quicktime plug-in to zoom in and out or rotate 3D images of selected works, such as an Egyptian ceramic hippopotamus or dancing satyr, but most of the artifacts are viewable with informative text in standard photo format -- whether winsome Estrucan woman or eerily modern Micronesian deity.
Impressionism
"Bonjour mes amis, I will be your guide on your tour of impressionism," begins this introduction to what was once a controversial art movement. Travel in a pop-up window with the cartoon boulevardier from salon to cafe, read selected artists' biographies, and best of all, enjoy the paintings. A companion to a 1999 traveling exhibition of Impressionist painting collected by European museums, the site focuses on educating viewers, especially schoolchildren, to understand and experience the innovative beauty of paintings by Degas, Monet, Cezanne, Renoir, Van Gogh, and so many more.
Leonardo da Vinci, Master Draftsman
Leonardo da Vinci accomplished much more in his lifetime than just painting the enigmatic smile of the "Mona Lisa". To honor the
artist, the Metropolitan Museum of Art designed an exhibit that showcases 140 of his drawings; 40 of these images are available
online. This ultimate Renaissance man lived a long and productive life, yet was legendary for his inability to finish projects. He
completed only 15 paintings, but his drawings number four times the body of work of even the most prolific draftsmen during his
era. Even when he was alive, collectors sought these beautiful and technically precise drawings. For example, the Codex Leicester
notebook illustrates Leonardo's skill as an engineer and his interest in science. For further detail on this master's life, a number of
experts offer comments about Leonardo's works in the audio guide.
Matisse Picasso
As the twin giants of modern art, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso may seem to be opposites. However, this site, and the three-city exhibition on which it's based, shows how the artists are complementary and their works influenced each other. Despite an initial rivalry, each felt the influence of the other. Matisse acknowledged, "Picasso sees everything." Later, Picasso noted, "When Matisse died he left his odalisques to me as a legacy," perhaps alluding to the intriguing nudes they both painted. The site features six sets of paintings by each artist with a side-by-side comparative analysis. Viewing a pairing such as Matisse's "Goldfish and Palette" and Picasso's "Harlequin" shows how the two artists sparked one another's creativity to new heights. The chronology notes the artists' interactions, from their first meeting in the winter of 1905-1906 to Matisse's death in 1954. The commitment of both men to reality-based art drew them together, and that commitment will draw you into their world.
Panoramas: The North American Landscape in Art
Get lost in this fantastic collection of Mexican, American, and Canadian impressions of "the mother country." The exhibit is split
into four central themes: The Evolving Landscape begins with the pastoral images of 19th century exploration and winds up with
today's gritty urban murals. The Social Landscape looks at varying depictions of native peoples and the fluid nature of cultural
identity. The Mythic Landscape section features several shimmering visions of an idealistic future. And the Personal Landscape explores the tricky relationship between artistic integrity and patriotism.
Smithsonian American Art Museum: Treasures to Go
the Smithsonian offers priceless gems of American art. "Treasures to Go" is organized as eight thematic exhibitions of paintings and sculptures. Images and descriptions of these works are presented here online as well as the itineraries of the shows.
Splendors of Ancient Egypt
Tate Online: Turner Collection
The Turner Bequest consists of nearly 300 oil paintings and around 30,000 sketches and watercolors that were left to the British people by English painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Now, the Tate Collection has made this immense and influential body of work available online. Turner is known for his impressionistic paintings of light, fire, sailing ships, seascapes, and naval battles, as well as sunrises, sunsets, and images from travels in Europe. Search the collection by subject, place name, date, or other parameters; browse the preselected collection highlights; or click through seven decades of the artist's sketchbooks for a page-by-page look.
Timeline of Art History
Thanks to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, you can travel through thousands of years of art online. Begin at 40,000 BC with the rock paintings of the Australian Aborigines, wander ahead to 8,000 BC to ogle the wonders of Ancient Egypt, then contrast the stone-cut churches of Lalibela in present-day Ethiopia with the gothic cathedrals of medieval France. You can browse the site by historical era, geography, or theme. The site's timeline ends at 1400 AD, but the Met promises it's a work in progress. After all, you can't rush great art.
The Trammell and Margaret Crow Collection of Asian Art
This ambitious tour from the Dallas-based art museum exhibits artwork from China, Japan, India, and Southeast Asia, spanning several millennia. It's a treasure trove of exquisite images and flashy web design that sometimes feels like a labyrinth of menus and pop-up windows. Wander through colorful screens that introduce regional culture, history, religion, and objets d'art. Some elements of the presentation require the LivePicture plug-in for viewing 3D animations, but even without the plug-in there's plenty to explore.
Van Gogh and Gauguin
From pink shrimps to sunflowers, this evocative and colorful Flash site explores the relationship between two Impressionistic painters, Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. Mouse over images to read from the artists' letters, and click on different parts of a painting for more detail or to move to another vignette. Sparse music and subtle animation move you through the rocky yet productive nine weeks Van Gogh and Gauguin spend together in the south of France. Their collaboration ended when, in a fit of madness, Van Gogh cut off part of his ear. The Background section spells out the history of the artists, their lives, their letters, their painting techniques, their subject matter, and the lasting influence of their friendship.
Van Gogh Light Exhibition
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, have collaborated on this luminous bilingual look at the evolution of lighting during the Industrial Age, from 1750-1900. A scrolling timeline explores the convergence of art, science, technology, and culture during the period. Colorful layers of images, activities, and anecdotes, as well as glowing pop-up windows about candles and lamps, kerosene and streetlights, will electrify the filaments of your imagination.
